iSearch Toolbar Removal

Recently I have had several people emailing me saying that their browser homepage is continually set to iSearch or that their machine has the iSearch toolbar installed and they cannot remove it. This is nothing to do with the iSearch PHP web site search engine or this site.

I've received the following email from another sufferer which may help you:

The cure to this problem is to delete the file "C:\Windows\system32\toolbar.dll" This should fix the problem these people are having. Just thought I'd let you know if you wanted to update this on your site. Hope I could be some help.

And an update (I think this info is for Win XP):

one other note I forgot to include, just remembered after I wrote this last night. People might only be able to delete the file in safe mode only and that is done by going to "Start, access the run command, type in msconfig, hit OK. The system configuration utility window will open up, click on the BOOT.INI tab, under Boot Option there should be a check box that says /SAFEBOOT, check this and then click OK at the bottom of the page, windows will prompt you to restart your computer, click Restart." Now users who couldn't erase the file in normal mode should be able too. "To restore Windows to normal mode go back to msconfig and uncheck the /Safeboot box the go to the General tab in the System Configuration Utility and click Normal Startup, then hit OK at the bottom of the screen and restart windows." Sorry I forgot to include this in my previous e-mail, it didn't dawn on me till later that some users may have to do this. It's a lot of writing but I hope it helps. And thanks for posting this info on your site, this toolbar/browser thing is a major anoyance.

Since then I've had the following response (and several others along the same lines):

I just got the instructions for removing the isearch toolbar. It worked well for removing the toolbar but my browser's toolbar options are still locked. (all grey and the isearch toolbar is checked in the view options of the browser).

Anyone know how to fix this?

And another response:

For XP you've got to click on 'Start>Run' then type in 'msconfig' and select 'Diagnostic Startup' before restarting your computer and then deleting the 'toolbar.dll' file manually. It works.

If you try this, please confirm whether it works or not via email.
